I WOKE UP TO NEWS THAT Quinn, the owner of the museum weâd looked into as part of the corrupted witch situation, wanted to talk to us. The Hermes witch was far from my favourite person. He had a distinctly elvish look to him, and his connections to the fae were far too strong for my tastes. Add in the fact he ran the museum full of powerful and dangerous artifacts, and he was a ticking time bomb.
âHeâs not that bad,â Gideon said to me with a smile.
âYou have to admit itâs a bit suspicious that heâs called us up when he has all of those connections to exactly the type of people weâre looking for,â I said.
Gideon laughed at me.
Maybe I was being a bit melodramatic because he was the last thing I wanted to deal with after only one cup of coffee.
âThose connections mean heâs the perfect person to call us up and help us. I admit itâs a little odd that he came to us rather than vice versa, but even witches like him can be helpful sometimes.â
We pulled up in front of the museum, and I thought back on the last time we were there. Someone had stolen what turned out to be a key artifact in the plot by the creatures of the between. Quinn hadnât been involved with that plot, at least not in a way that we could prove. The theft had looked a bit too easy, but Gideon was right. I needed to work with the evidence we had and stop judging the snarky Hermes witch by his elvish appearance.
Quinn gave us a big fake smile as we walked up to the museum. His long snow-white hair had been tied back into a complicated braid. His silvery-grey suit was beautifully tailored and showed off the wealth he wielded.
âMr. Shepherd, Iâm so glad you came. I believe I have some information that will help with your investigation,â Quinn said.
I bit my tongue. I wasnât sure how he knew we were looking into the missing artifacts. It wasnât entirely surprising. Witches were a ridiculously gossipy bunch, and fae werenât much better. The client had probably bragged that she had the prestigious company looking into her theft and word had spread from there. A little privacy and discreteness would have been nice for a change.
Quinn led us through the lobby and to the right where his large office sat. The room was spacious with strong clean lines. There were some watercolours on the walls depicting beautiful meadows. My mind immediately went to Fae, but I pushed that aside and reminded myself he was a Hermes witch and I needed to be less biased.
âI assume youâre aware that each of the missing artifacts has been aimed at taking magic and putting it into someone with little to no magic,â Quinn said as he settled himself behind the narrow silvery desk.
âWe are,â Gideon said.
âWith that in mind, I have put together a list of possible targets.â
Quinn pushed a sheet of paper across the desk towards Gideon.
